Position Opening Mid- January 2023 – Circulation Desk Assistant – Columbia Public Library
• Tuesday & Thursday 4pm – 8pm (OR 5pm-8pm), plus TWO Saturdays per month (3.5 hours per shift)
• Approximately 15-18 hours per pay period (bi-weekly).
Responsibilities:
• Answer phone and in-person questions at front desk.
• Check in returned materials and reshelve them.
• Check out books and media to patrons
• Place holds for patrons on requested items
• Assist patrons in locating materials on shelves
• Assist with basic computer questions (public access machines)
• Receive and notate sales from Book Nook
• Receive and notate late fees and replacement costs
• Read shelves to make sure materials are properly arranged
• Operate digital fax machine for patrons
• Make xerox copies for patrons
• Show patrons how to print emails and documents from their phone using public access computers or wireless printing
• Perform periodic library walk-throughs to see if anyone needs assistance
• Ability to lift at least 25lbs
• Running Square Card reader to accept payments
• Enforcing Patron Conduct Policy
• Routine bathroom checks and light cleaning as needed
• Assisting with opening and closing procedures
Skills Needed:
• Pleasant demeanor and patience
• Willingness to learn Sierra circulation software
• Basic computer skills (mostly Word processing, possibly some Excel)
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize
• Willingness to work as part of a team
• Familiarity with smartphones (Android and Apple)
Education Requirements:
Responsible High School Student, High School graduate or GED certificate. Willingness to learn the library-specific circulation software.
