Popcorn to Make Your Tastebuds Go Nuts: Half Nuts Popcorn, Wrightsville

For more than a decade, Half Nuts Popcorn has been a Wrightsville favorite. It’s known for creative gourmet flavors, friendly faces, and the kind of small-town charm that keeps people coming back for “just one more bag.”

Once you taste it, you will understand why.

It all began modestly in the basement of Gina and Tim Jones in 2013 when Gina began experimenting with creating flavors with a commercial popcorn machine in her basement. The delicious results began to get local notice as people discovered this was truly gourmet popcorn. Once you take a bite you discover the flavor really “pops”!

But Gina wasn’t happy at her regular job. One day she came home and told Tim, “I think I quit my job today!” With more time to devote to the popcorn, customers began to increase.

One day she asked her husband, “Tim, can I have your tool shed for the popcorn? If we build it they will come!” Whatever Tim’s actual feelings on the matter were, he gamely agreed. Things progressed fine, “until one day WGAL came out and did a segment on us,” Gina recalls. “For the whole next month there was a line down to the alley!”

After that, there was no turning back. Tim finally quit his job to make the popcorn full-time. Jones notes, “Popcorn is fun—and when you add personality to that it’s double the fun!”

But as the couple began to think about retirement, what would they do with the business?

Enter neighbor Lori Cappello.

She was the director of medical education for a large medical device company. But she also was tired of the grind of her job in the corporate world. It may have been high-powered, but she was traveling all the time, and felt a distinct lack of connection, warmth, and sense of meaning.

When she heard Gina and Tim were selling, she remembered how she had sat and watched people come and go at Half Nuts. She had thought wistfully to herself, “people always leave happier than when they came.” A sense of happiness was most definitely missing at her corporate job.

It would mean a huge change. “Can I do this?” she asked herself. Then the answer came: “Life’s too short. I want to do something meaningful, something to give back.” The other factor was the location. “The town of Wrightsville just won me over with the nostalgia of kids riding bikes and walking by with fishing poles ready to catch some fish.” It was a home-town pace of life that was a welcome contrast to the fast-paced corporate world she had been part of for years.

Cappello had discovered that life in one of the southern Pennsylvania Rivertowns had its advantages.

Gina and Tim already had a strong bond with Lori and her husband Jason. “The two of them have the same personality as ours, just a few decades younger!” Jones laughs. (FYI, Tim is the “straight man” while Gina is the “firecracker”.)

At the end of 2023 they made the plunge. The business came with a rancher next door to the tool shed, which was converted into a full-size operation. Today, Half Nuts offers 31 mouthwatering popcorn flavors, along with ice cream, sorbet, iced coffee, slushies, crushies (a slushy and ice cream combo), and refreshing drinks—something for everyone on a hot summer afternoon.

To reflect the additional offerings, they changed the name to River Rock Provisions: home of Half Nuts Popcorn. They are in the process  of building an outdoor picnic table seating area, slated to open Memorial Day. There will be an area for pop-up events with other local businesses, and even a watering area for four-legged visitors.

But what makes the Half Nuts experience special is how Lori continues the tradition of warmth and connection with customers. She states, “We truly care about our customers. It’s about building small town community. We have deep relationships and can talk about life’s challenges.”

A teenager with blue-green hair is listening nearby. “Yeah,” she affirms. “She’s the mom of this street.”

If you would like your tastebuds exploded, or a friendly chat, stop on by, grab a bag, sit a spell, and enjoy the beautiful view of the river. Chances are—you’ll leave happier than when you came!
